1998 Chevrolet Z28 - Black 2 door hardtop. (See a pattern?)

.....

Ok this Z28 was yet another impulse buy.  Sometimes you get lucky and thing turn out all right.  Would luck be a LS1?  This purchase was a little silly because I did not drive it before buying it.  Well I was driving a very similar Z28 and this one was black, so how could it be bad?  I remember driving off the lot right after signing the papers thinking, "oh, how wimpy".  The whole car did not feel as macho as the '96 with the LT1.  That car would start shaking to the beat of engine when you fired it up and had a deep muscular sound.   The '98 LS1 sounded, (no offense please) a little ricer.

But this was a car that took some time to appreciate.  It had the TTops, leather, the six speed, and chrome wheels.  The new for '98 front clip did look a little funky.  It has not stood the test of time and the LT1 Camaros are the better looking car.

BUT, once the engine was broken in all you had to do was put your foot in it to appreciate the magic.  The LS1 was underrated at 305 HP.  I never had this car to the track but it sure felt like low 13s to me.  Stock LS1s track times have proven me only a little optimistic.  With a few mod I could have had a 12 second car, but at the time I never knew.  First gear was over pretty fast but second gear pulled so hard you knew this was a quick car.  And it kept pulling right through third.  Fun!  And very few traffic light losses.

This turned out to be the car that I kept for the longest time, 4 years and 90,000 miles.  A record!  Over time I did become attached to this car even though it always sort of felt as if I was driving in a bathtub.

Fourth gen Fbodies I suppose are my most favorite cars ever when taken as a group.  I am on my third one now!.  You would think I would wise up!  But this car only ever let me down once and I was only a few blocks from home.  Otherwise it was almost as reliable as a Toyota.

My time with this car ended when I needed a truck to pull my boat around.  Luckily Eileen like driving trucks so I could continue to drive fun cars.  This next one was not really on the fun side but did have somewhat of a sporty aspect except for its beige (gold?) color.

So long LS1 Z28, hello Maxima SE.
